Physics

Physics at UEA is a fresh and dynamic subject with strong links to other sciences.

We undertake internationally recognised interdisciplinary research and develop new and innovative modules for study, in a friendly and welcoming environment.

We have a particularly strong focus on astrophysics and quantum physics, but our university is also active in fields as diverse as geophysics, chemical physics and fluid dynamics. We are continuously working on making our degree programmes relevant, careers-focussed, interfacing with cutting-edge research, and taught using modern approaches to pedagogy. As well as the modules that you will find listed here, we are in the process of developing new modules for delivery in the coming years.

The majority of our teaching is in small classes, making learning Physics at UEA a more personal experience, with approachable staff who have time for you. You will undertake laboratory work in each year, in our fantastic new labs.

As well as modules based in Physics itself, our undergraduate degree programmes have a lot of flexibility, with a wide range of optional modules from the Schools of Chemistry, Computing Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Mathematics. In the third year of all Physics degree programmes, students undertake a specialist project module that allows them to investigate a Physics topic that most interests them, under the guidance of a member of staff. For the MPhys, there is an additional final-year project that can be separate from the third-year project or connected, where there is time to undertake a piece of research in a cutting-edge domain of Physics.

Those starting on the Foundation Year, who may have come to Physics from a wide range of different backgrounds, will enjoy a supportive programme with teaching that is tailor-made to help them progress smoothly onto the first year of the BSc afterwards. Through various modules, students develop a wide range of useful transferrable skills that make them highly employable afterwards, and prepare them for postgraduate education.
