The outcome of the UK’s negotiations with the EU will have far-reaching consequences for the UK’s relationship with its European neighbours.
The aim of this project is to examine and communicate research on the negotiations between the UK and the EU, the UK’s relationship with the European Union, and the UK’s broader relations with ‘Europe’. The first phase of the research will be to follow the Article 50 negotiations, to examine the positions taken by the two sides, and to explore the implications of the various scenarios. Thereafter, the focus will be on the interaction between the UK and the EU, the UK’s wider repositioning in Europe, and the impact on the UK and EU sides. The research will pay particular attention to the positions and action of the EU institutions and the EU-27, which are often overlooked or downplayed in coverage of Brexit in the UK.
The findings of the research will be published in several forms, including blogs, podcasts and academic articles, and will be accompanied by a series of animations. A programme of events – national, international, regional and local – is planned.
The project is funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council under its ‘UK in a Changing Europe’ programme. ‘The UK in a Changing Europe’ was created in 2015, and has achieved a strong reputation for its independence and the quality and rigour of its analysis.
Professor Kassim is one of nine Senior Fellows appointed under the programme in 2019. He was previously PI of ‘Negotiating Brexit: national governments, EU institutions, and the UK’, a cross-national observatory monitoring approaches to the Article 50 negotiations on the part of 15 member states, Norway, and the EU institutions. Professor Kassim previously held a Senior Fellow in the first round in 2015. In his career, Professor Kassim has published widely on the relationship between the EU and its member states, the EU institutions, and policy in competition and in aviation.
